Every woman makes choices. And no one has made more difficult choices than Olivia Grayson. The enormously successful businesswoman missed out on much of her children's lives while she built her legendary home-furnishings empire. In Danielle Steel's character-rich novel, Olivia faces the past, tries to balance the present and make amends where due, while still running her vastly successful business.
As a way of making up to them for time lost, Olivia spends months each year planning a holiday that everyone in her family will enjoy. This summer she has arranged a dream trip in the Mediterranean on a luxurious yacht, which she hopes will be the most memorable vacation of all. Her lavish gesture every year expresses her love for them, and regret at all the important times she missed during her children's younger years. Her younger daughter, Cassie, a hip London music producer, refuses the invitation altogether, as she does every year. Her older daughter, Liz, lives in her mother's shadow, with a terror of failure as she tries to recapture her dream of being a writer. And her sons, John and Phillip, work for Olivia, for better or worse, with wives who wish they didn't.
In the splendor of the Riviera, this should be a summer to remember, with Olivia's children, grandchildren, and daughters-in-law on board. But as with any family gathering, there are always surprises, and no matter how glamorous the setting, things don't always turn out as one hopes.
Family dynamics are complicated, old disappointments die hard, and as forgiveness and surprising revelations enter into it, new bonds are formed, and the future takes on a brighter hue. And one by one, with life's irony, Olivia's children find themselves committing the same "sins" for which they blamed their mother for so many years. It is a summer of compassion, important lessons, and truth.
The Sins of the Mother captures the many sides of family love complex, challenging, funny, passionate, and hopefully enduring. Along the way, we are enthralled by an unforgettable heroine, a mother strong enough to take more than her fair share of the blame, wise enough to respect her children for who they really are, and forgiving enough to love them unconditionally.

I gave it 4-stars which to me is very good. This book kept me engaged and I really liked the characters. Of course, I'vebeen a fan of Danielle Steel since she had her first book
published and have read most of them over the years. I have
never been disappointed and they would all rate 4-stars.
Only two, which remain as my alltime favorites, get my 5-star
rating. They are from earlier in Ms. Steel's career and they are
Kaleidoscope and Zoya. I re-read them every few years.
I look forward to many more books from this fine author.

The Sins of the Mother A Novel (Audible Audio Edition) Danielle Steel Cassandra Campbell Brilliance Audio Books Reviews
This is not the worst book written by Danielle Steele, neither is it her best. I have mixed feelings.
I was drawn into the story early on, at the same time that I was disgusted by the decadent lifestyle of this family, particularly at a time when there are so many people out of work and those who have lost their homes because of our terrible economy.
It also seemed to me that everything came together perfectly at the end and too quickly to be realistic. There are just too many mothers out there who can attest to the fact that it is just not that easy!
This was a light, fluffy, piece of fiction without much substance and nothing to distinguish it from thousands of other novels except that it happened to be written by Danielle Steel. Just Okay!!!
I love all of Danielle Steel's books. I have many. But the Sins of the Mother was extraordinary, one of my favorites !! I could not put it down. It's a wonderful story, a must read ! Danielle Steel's words are so gripping and keep you involved in her stories from start to finish. The Sins of the Mother is a beautiful story and it kept me fascinated from start to finish. Sometimes I wish she would write a part II to many of her books because you just want more !
I enjoyed this novel by Danielle Steel and recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the author.
Although I have read many of her books and she is high on my list of authors I enjoy reading, I didn't bother sampling the book, just went ahead and purchased it. Had I done so, as I have with all other books purchased through , I probably wouldn't have bought this one.
The main character (Mother) I felt hadn't really committed any major sins except that she was a workaholic and her business was more important to her than being a full time mum to her 4 children. At the end of the day she made up for her sins and the children were not in anyway really affected by her lack of being there, whilst they were growing up. After all they all turned out ok in the long run.
Good but I have read Danielle's other books which were really good.
The last time I read a Danielle Steele book was about 30 years ago. It was a decent "beach read," a lot of fluff, but at least there was a plot. The Sins of the Mother was a selection by one of my book clubs. I am usually a good book club member. Before now I have read every book to the end, and even when it was outside of my comfort zone, I could find something worthy of discussion.
I was ready to ditch this book in the first chapter, but I plodded on to 23% on my . So much repetition and rehashing the issues of each of the children of Olivia Grayson, and not a plot in sight. No particular conflict, no specific protagonist or antagonist. Why bother?
I am an avid Danielle Steele reader; I own every novel she has published. "Sins of the Mother" is about Olivia Grayson who is a very ambitious business women and part time Mother, if that. Her children were raised by her Mother and Husband. The story tells how her now adult children feel about all the times she has missed out on and holds her accountable. Oliva's way of trying to make amends is taking them all on a luxury vacation once a year. I can't believe I am saying this about a Danielle Steele novel but...... I did not like this story at all. The first thing that I did not like about it is -the first half of the book was so repetitive that it got to the point that it was irritating. The second half moves along at a steady pace. Maybe it is just me, on my own beliefs of motherhood. As I strongly believe that children need there mothers. Anyway, the story did nothing for me. If anything, it just made me sad. Ms Steele are you trying to tell us what a more "modern" family is in 2013? If that is the case, it is not what I am looking for.
You fund the love of your knife and lose him at an early age. You build an empire but lose the live and respect of two of yourself children. A grandmother who is a mother to your children and teaches love, compassion, and respect. Greed from a daughter-in-law and then the love of a younger woman, a daughter who finds confidence as a writer, a grandson who comes out. The mother who finds love and all the family comes together. A wonderful novel as always.
Sadly, The more Danielle Steele I read, the more I am annoyed by her repetition of descriptions, phrase and events. It slows down the reading and makes me wonder if Ms. Steele thinks her readers are slow and have to see things 3 or more times in print to remember what was written on the prior page.
